History

It is said that Shree Nandaneshwara Temple has a History of more than 2000 years, but available evidence show that the Temple existed prior to 1300 A.D. Though the mention of Panambur and Mangalore in various historical documents of Greece Egypt and Rome is available from 2nd Century B.C., there is no evidence of the correct year of establishment the correct year of establishment of Temple. However both the ancient temples of Panambur i.e, Shree Nandaneshwara Temple and Shree Vishnumurthy Temple has been retained by Government while almost all land surrounding the temple had been acquired for New Mangalore Port Trust.

According to Shilashasana and books on Karavali Karnataka cultural History in the middle of 14th Century even though Tulunadu lost its freedom and merged with Vijayanagara Empire, still a lost of areas were ruled by local Samanthas the then ruler was Shri Nandana Hegde who was a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu. He had two daughters by the name of SRI DEVI and BHOODEVI who used to visit Shree Vishnumurthy Temple daily together to worship. One day younger sister Bhoodevi could not visit the Temple along with here elder sister due to unavoidable circumstances. Angered by elder sisters action of going to Temple alone she compelled here father Nandana Hegde to build another Temple over night. This version along with shilashasana support the existence of the above temple before 13th century. In 18th Century Sri. Annayya Adiga, Sri. Narayana Upadhyaya, Sri. Thimappa Shetty were the Trustees. As per documents available from the year 1912 -1924 Sri. Kudumbur Venkataramana Holla and Sri. Achutha Karanta were the Trustees. After this from 1924-1947 Panambur Chatramane Sheshappayya was the Trustee. Then from 1948-1976 Panambur Chatramane Shrinivasa Rao alias Bheema Rao was the governing Trustee along with Padoli Thimmappayya. After the demise of Bheema Rao, Sri. T.P.Keshavan and Sri. P. Before the latest renovations the earlier 4 Praker’s were built in the time of Kudumbur Holla and due to shortage of funds for this, Prakaras were cleared in the time of Patel P.C. Sheshappayya.

When he took over the Management, outer prakar’s construction were made in his tenure. The Car festival Mahostava celebrations were extended to nine days instead of earlier five days. All the requirements for 9days Car festival like, Lalakhi, Pallakki, Chandramandala, Charriot, Surayamandala Charriot, BRAHAMA RATHA CHARRIOT were made in his term. Chandramandala has 4 wheels, while Suryamandala has 10 wheel’s, Brahama Ratha, a total Vastu height of 12’5” and wheels of the size of 5’3” is itself a gigantic glory when decorated with big door and small red and white flags, The ‘Chappara’ at the time of Car Festival is named as Antara Chappara and is rarely seen any where.

In the year 1988, to get directions for renovation, an ‘Ashtamangala Prashna’ was conducted and as a result of that a complete renovation was decided and carried out by forming various committees under the leadership of Sri. P.V. Aithala. In his tenure Mahaganapathi Gudi and Sri. Kantheri Dhoomavathi Gudi were successfully constructed. Afterwards a new committee was made under the leadership of B. Nagaraja Shetty, at an estimated cost of Rs. 2.00 Crores, A new GARBHAGUDI, MUKAMANTAPA & GOPURAS on and around the temple was constructed. Ramachandra Hebbar Mudamatta was Trustee then and in the year 2001 Punar Prathista of Lord Nandaneshwara was successfully made.
