History :
This temple was owned exclusively by one single family, the Uppinangady Sowcar Bhat family that migrated from Goa during the 16th century via Haldipur, in Uttara Kannada District, on account of Portuguese atrocities. The temple had made a humble beginning, but in the course of time it made rapid progress. But the family magnanimously relinquished its rights on 22nd November,1931 and handed over to GSB Samaj with all assets and wealth, that was half the town of Uppinangady and kilos of gold and silver ornaments. To quote one single instance, the temple had a unique garland of 24 shaligrams decked in gems and gold worth lakhs of rupees but unfortunately in July, 1984 it was stolen away which could not be retrieved so far. The land reforms by the State Government took away the very source of income and a stage came when it was difficult to maintain the temple even for a few weeks. But God was kind. The residents of the town rose to the occasion and managed the show. The Sahasra Kumbhabhishekam performed from 2nd to 5th Feb., 2000 in the holy presence of H. H. Shrimat Sudhindra Tirth Swamiji is a classic example of a great team work. Money poured in and to day the temple is in a sound position. This is really a great success story.
